"I bought my John Deere 990 new in 2006. It is a no frills, gear drive tractor. It has been reliable, economical and fun to operate. In 8 years my only problem was the battery which out gassed and corroded the terminals as did a lot of the John Deere CUTS. I installed an optima battery which solved the problem. The voltage across the lugs of the solenoid should be the same as the voltage of the battery. If not, you either have a defective solenoid, bad/loose wiring connection, or the battery is bad. First thing i did when i got it was to pull the clutch and send it to the doc,got a tech manual. Is it just me ? the lay out of this tech manual just plain sucks,not to mention it is not cheap.
